Software Update! August 4, 2006

Just in time for Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference comes another release of Slide for Mac OS X.

More New Features!

The Slide Dashboard widget. What else can I say? Get Slide, in your Dashboard.

Visual, social bookmarking. Drag and drop URLs from any application to Slide, and we’ll take a little picture of the web page and upload it to a Slide Show which you (and your friends) can play back on your desktop or you can embed into a web page. (It looks like this.) You can make any number of Slide Shows to store any number of categories of bookmarks, then make a playlist of your bookmark groups!

Upload or bookmark URLs with a single gesture. When you drag and drop a file, multiple files, a folder, or a URL to Slide, you’ll now see a list of all of your Slide Shows — just release the mouse over the show to upload. (If you have a lot of Slide Shows, you can scroll through the list by mousing over the arrows.)

One trick I find particularly useful is the ability to drag proxy icons from most Mac OS X graphics applications right into Slide for a quick and easy upload.

Easy embedding. Control-click (or right-click) on anything in the Slide window and choose Copy Image HTML to copy a quick HTML fragment which will embed the image in a web page. Or, choose Copy HTML for [Show Name]… to copy the HTML code for an embedded Slide widget that you can put on your blog or social networking site.

Upload and share anything. Previous versions of Slide for Mac OS X could only upload photos; now you can upload anything. And then…

Send things to your friends quickly. Click on something in Slide. Then, just type a few letters of the name or e-mail address of the person you want to send it to — Slide will autocomplete from the names and addresses in your Address Book, just like Apple Mail.

Themes. Tired of the basic white Slide? Our interface now comes in Snow (original), U2 Special Edition, Plexi, Autumn, Clover, and Starry Night. You’ll notice in the above screenshot that we’re running the U2 Special Edition theme.

Improvements & Fixes

Are we there yet? Our upload progress indicator (at the lower right corner of the Slide window) is improved to be a little more accurate, and we also are showing the number of files left to upload in Slide’s Dock icon.

What’s New? In the Images preference pane, you can configure just how new things in your Slide have to be for Slide to mark the item as, well, new.

Then, when watching Slide shows, you’ll see a little badge on the picture which looks something like:

It’s pretty useful when watching feeds from TechCrunch, Boing Boing, Google News, or anything else with a lot of fresh content.

That’s all for now, see you next week at WWDC!
